LFP vs. NMC: Why We Only Install Lithium-Iron-Phosphate Storage

When a homeowner asks us which battery is "the best," the honest answer is that the question is usually about the wrong layer. The brand on the enclosure matters far less than the chemistry inside it — and for solar storage that sits on a garage wall and cycles daily for a decade, we've standardized on one: lithium-iron-phosphate, or LFP.

The chemistry trade-off

The two chemistries you'll actually be offered are LFP and NMC (nickel-manganese-cobalt). NMC is energy-dense, which is why it dominates in electric vehicles where every kilogram counts. But density comes with heat and with a lower thermal-runaway threshold. In a car with an active liquid cooling system and a crash-tested pack, that's an engineered trade-off. Bolted to the wall of a Phoenix garage that hits 115°F in July, it's a different calculation.

LFP is less energy-dense — the pack is a little bigger for the same capacity — but it runs cooler, tolerates far more charge cycles, and is dramatically more thermally stable. For stationary storage, where you have the wall space and you care about the pack still holding capacity in year ten, none of NMC's advantages apply and all of LFP's do.

What it means for your system

A quality LFP bank will deliver 6,000-plus full cycles while still retaining around 80% of its original capacity. Cycle it once a day and that's well over a decade and a half of daily service before it's meaningfully diminished. That longevity is what lets us back the storage with a real warranty instead of fine print.

It also changes how we size the system. Because LFP handles daily deep cycling gracefully, we can size the bank tightly to your actual load profile — enough for peak shaving and backup, without the padding you'd add to protect a chemistry that hates being run hard. You pay for resilience, not for headroom you'll never touch.

Focus, again

We don't sell every battery on the market and let you sort out the chemistry. We install the one that survives our climate and our duty cycle, and we size it against your data. That's the same principle that runs through everything we do: pick the engineering that protects the production numbers, and skip the rest.
